The civil society network in Jonglei state has witnessed a positive reconciliation between its leader and the state authorities, including the national security services. This milestone achievement follows the facilitation efforts by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in promoting open civic and political space in Jongeli state. The engagement revolved around implementing the state governor’s directive issued on 24th June 2024, urging county commissioners to ensure the observation of civic and political space within the state.

Executive Director of CEPO, highlighted the importance of opening up civic and political space in South Sudan, particularly during the ongoing political transitional phase expected in the next two years. He emphasized that the restrictive environment has impeded meaningful civic and political engagement by citizens in transitioning the country from violence to peace. Over the past six years, severe restrictions on civic and political activities have pushed numerous activists and political figures to seek refuge abroad due to safety concerns.

The CEPO Civic Space Watch initiative commended the proactive measures taken by the governors of Jonglei and Western Equatoria states in issuing state orders to uphold open civic and political space in their respective regions. These actions serve as commendable examples of state leaders embracing the principles of democracy and good governance in South Sudan. Mr. Yakani stressed the essential role of open civic and political space in empowering the public to combat corruption, advocate for transparency, ensure accountability, uphold the rule of law, promote gender equality, safeguard human rights, and protect media freedoms.

In conclusion, CEPO called upon various government authorities and security agencies to embrace and support the cultivation of an open civic and political space to facilitate genuine transitional processes in South Sudan. This step is crucial in fostering democratic values, ensuring citizen participation, and advancing the nation towards a more stable and inclusive future.
